Get ready to be transported to the South of France! During flowering season, Bridestowe Lavender farm is filled with gorgeous bright purple rows of lavender set against a backdrop of blue mountains (reminiscent of the lavender fields in the South of France). A visit to Bridestowe lavender farm makes for a lovely day trip from Launceston and a great addition to any Tasmanian itinerary.
When to Go:
The lavender is in full bloom from December to January, but it’s best to visit before the harvesting starts in mid-January. Bridestowe is open from 9-5 during these months with tours of the farm and distillery offered throughout the day.
How to Get There:
From Launceston, follow the B81 highway through Lilydale – there are plenty of signs along the way. It’s a short 45 minute drive from Launceston. There is also a bus service that runs once daily, departing Launceston Transit Centre at 8:00am and leaving Bridestowe at 3:45pm.
Entry Fees and Parking:
Entry is $10 per person for non-residents and Tasmanians get free entry! Parking is available onsite. The entry fee includes parking and a guided tour of the property.
Exploring the Property:
You can join a guided tour (included in entry price) for information on the harvesting and distillery processes or you can wander the beautiful rows of lavender by yourself. Once you’ve taken a bazillion photos, your feet are covered in the red soil and you’re beginning to feel light-headed from smelling all the lavender, it’s time to hit up the cafe!
The cafe serves sandwiches, snacks and lots of interesting lavender flavoured meals and sweets. Don’t leave without trying the famous lavender ice-cream! I’m lactose intolerant so I forced my boyfriend to try it for me, and he first described it as ‘indescribable’ before deciding it tasted like a vanilla ice-cream with a subtle lavender after-taste.
After you’ve had your fix of lavender flavoured treats, you can wander around the gift shop to try out the lavender beauty products or snuggle up to one of the famous ‘Bobbie Bears‘. The gift shop also stocks a large range of lavender flavoured jams, chutneys, tea and spice mixes.
Things to do Nearby:
To make the most of this day trip be sure to check out some of the other things to do nearby. Around 10 minutes drive from Bridestowe Lavender Farm is the small town of Lilydale. Here you can take an easy 10 minute return walk through the rainforest to two beautiful waterfalls.
If you visit during peak flowering time (December to January) you can pick delicious organic blueberries at a farm around 10 minutes drive away (just outside of Lilydale – there are plenty of signs). The blueberries cost only $7 per kg – an absolute bargain! And they taste so much better than from the supermarket.
